B.S. EXERCISE SCIENCE

  

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

 

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise Science includes the general education core, which provides the foundational understandings necessary to function properly in society or as a professional, and, professional competencies, those competencies essential to perform the specialized task of an exercise science professional.  The general education component encompasses those courses generally required by all students regardless of their major.  Professional competencies are those proficiencies, understanding, and abilities needed by the professional.  Areas of competencies include  human anatomy, human physiology, exercise physiology, anatomical kinesiology, CPR and basic first aid; exercise prescription for normal and special populations; health promotion; administrative practices; human relations; professional development; and practical experience.  The curriculum includes a total of 123 semester hours.

 

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

 

Careers in fitness/wellness education and programming have expanded in recent years to include hospitals, clinics, corporate fitness, private clubs, rehabilitation facilities, spas, and other specialized facilities. Also, many students major in exercise science to prepare for pursuit of degrees in  rehabilitation sciences such as Physical or Occupational Therapy.

UNIQUE/SPECIAL FEATURES

 

The Exercise Science curriculum contains a substantial elective component.  This feature allows students, in cooperation with their advisor, to select courses that meet their specific educational goals.  Students are encouraged to choose a minor or specialty area.

 

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

      Graduates will:

  • Acquire an extensive base of knowledge in regard to structure and function of the human body during rest and exercise, development of programs of exercise for health purposes, and other related content areas;

  • Exhibit a wide range of practical skills including exercise testing and other physical evaluations, exercise leadership in a variety of activities, and ability to develop a comprehensive fitness program for an individual or industry;

  • Develop technological competence utilizing widely-used computers and software, industry specific software, industry specific apparatus, and equipment for metabolic and body composition analysis; and,

  • Contribute to the well being of the community, region, and national through advanced study and/or employment in a meaningful occupational setting.
